OUR FIRST ASSIGNMENT

After winning the competition for the design of the poster, we discovered that we needed to finally put together all the parts you need as professional photographer.
A large format camera to set focus on the whole picture and the quality we needed. Built byus for 3 days in a hands maid store of metallurgical industry. The bellows that connects the film plane and the lens plane, piece of leather made by my mother at home. The lens: Schneider 240mm, resulting from the trade by the camera Linhof technika I buy to the photographer Tito (foto tito) in Bogota. The tripod was standing on a table and I on a seat at the same table. My head was against the ceiling of the room, and my back against the wall. was uncomfortable when I fell the black cloth that is used for focusing.
thanks to the improvised screws in the camera, we need repeated 4 times the picture, once can mount the chassis of the film, he lost all the settings of the uprights, and did not know the outcome until you see the development.

Lights: we pay initial fee to Fotomoriz (Broncolor dealers in Bogota) for our first set of lights. 3 lights of 200-watt Monolight heads / sec.
Study: rented room in a house, we had to empty every day for safety.
barely fit model (my wife), the products, the 3 lights on the set and me.
Susi makeup and hair stylist her own while I worked in the composition of the products. as we had no assistant, once I was on the table behind the camera and she posed sitting on the floor without moving any adjustment of lights or composition, took a long time, which added to the final, few days.
Then came the photomechanical work and printing with OPgraficas at Bogota.
The result was very successful and represent our start as photographers in the fashion world in Colombia

NUESTRO PRIMER ENCARGO

Luego de ganar en el concurso por el diseño del afiche, descubrimos que finalmente necesitábamos poner juntas todas las piezas que necesita un fotógrafo profesional.

Una camara de gran formato para lograr el enfoque en toda la foto y la calidad que necesitábamos. Construida por nosotros durante 3 días en un tayer de metalmecanica. El fuelle que conecta el plano de pelicula y lente, pieza de cuero fabricada por mi madre en casa. El lente: Schneider 240mm, resultado del cambalache por la camara Linhof technika que le compre al fotografo Tito (foto tito) en Bogota. El tripode estaba parado sobre una mesa y yo en un asiento en la misma mesa. Mi cabeza daba contra el techo de la habitacion, y mi espalda en la pared. era incomodo cuando se me caia el trapo negro que se usa para enfocar.

gracias a los tornillos improvisados de la camara, repetimos 4 veces la foto, por que al montar el chasis de la pelicula, perdia todos los ajustes de los montantes, y no sabiamos el resultado hasta ver el revelado.

Luces: dimos la cuota inicial en Fotomoriz (distribuidores de broncolor en bogota) para nuestro primer equipo de luces. 3 cabezas monolight de 200 wat/sec.

Estudio: La habitación rentada en una casa, que teniamos que desocupar cada dia por seguridad.

apenas cabiamos la modelo (mi esposa), los productos, las 3 luces del set y yo.

Susi se maquillo y peino ella misma, mientras yo trabajaba en la composición de los productos. como no teníamos asistente, una vez estaba yo encima de la mesa detrás de la cámara y ella sentada en el piso posando sin moverse, cualquier ajuste de luces o composición, tomaba mucho tiempo, lo cual sumo al final varios días.

Luego vino el trabajo de fotomecanica e impresion con OP gráficas en Bogota.

El resultado fue muy exitoso y represento nuestra entrada como fotografos al mercado de la moda en Colombia.

JEISON'S STORY

An earthquake struck the city of Armenia, in Colombia,and Semana magazine asked me to go.When we entered the city, and saw corpses, mangled and bloody, I then decided I would try to find the most positive story possible. But there was nothing positive to show. Before finding what ended up being the cover of the magazine, I do photos of people risked their lives to venture into the aisles of supermarkets on the verge of collapse, a desperate attempt to get some food while their families who were waiting outside cried, screamed and pleaded with their relatives not to enter.

While photographing a physician who worked tirelessly despite having lost his entire family who were buried under their own collapsed home, we watched a soldier, who was alive when we arrived and who I had photographed in his bed, died suddenly in the arms of his father.

The famous coffee loading vehicles, jeepaos, were loaded with coffins.

In the center of the city you could not take a step without finding people who were desperate, sad, injured, and hungry, as well as makeshift shelters of sticks and plastic along the ruined streets.

They had encountered a child survivor among the rubble of a house. Due to the instability of the area, police had roped off the site and was therefore impossible for me to approach.I decided to go around the block. Accustomed to the rubble after two days walking around the town, I began climbing, approaching the site from behind. Two hours later I managed to find my spot, about twenty meters from the rescue location where I remain hidden from the authorities who might expel me from the site. As the hours passed, I slowly went closer so the policemen would become accustomed to my presence, protecting my cameras from the rain,I had taken advantage of each guard shift change, and arriving within three meters from the scene by two in the morning. From there I could learn all about Jeison's rescue, trapped eight meters into the rubble and five meters deep. There were police officers, firefighters, miners, civil defense and foreign consultants. Five people lying in a row dug a tunnel, slowly excavating and evacuating debris. By six o'clock they could finally talk to Jeison. Now they had to dig around him to clear the debris that imprisoned his body. At one point, they needed something sharp to cut the sole of his shoe, and I gave them my small pocketknife which turned out to be the perfect tool, and I instantly became part of the team. At seven o'clock they let me drag out my camera and take a single photo of Jeison in the end of the tunnel .

Mid-morning, while waiting for Jeison to be removed, I heard a voice from the debris underneath me. We all remained quiet to detect the source and perhaps rescue another victim of this horror. We shouted and looked but we did not hear anything again.The next day, while passing by the ruins of Jeison's house, I saw rescuers removing the remains of his mother, who had been trapped in the very place we had stayed all night.

LA HISTORIA DE JEISON

La revista Semana me encargo el cubrimiento fotografico de un terremoto sacudió la ciudad de Armenia, ubicada en la zona cafetera de Colombia.

Todo estaba destruido. Cuando entramos a la ciudad, lo primero que vi fueron unos restos humanos, mutilados y ensangrentados. Esa no hera lo que queria mostrar de la tragedia. De ahí en adelante, sólo pensé en buscar la historia más positiva posible. Pero no había nada así. Antes de encontrar lo que fue la portada de la revista, tuve que ver cosas muy dificiles.

La gente arriesgaba su vida al aventurarse a entrar a las carreras a un supermercado a punto de colapsar, para sacar algo de comida mientras se producían réplicas y sus familias veían desde afuera, lloraban a gritos y rogaban a sus parientes no entrar.

Mientras fotografiaba a un médico que trabajaba intensamente a pesar de haber perdido a toda su familia al quedar enterrada bajo su propia casa, vi cómo un soldado que estaba vivo cuando llegamos y a quien había tomado una foto en su cama, moría de repente en brazos de su padre.

Los famosos jeepaos cafeteros cargaban los ataúdes en los costados y el techo.

En el centro de la ciudad no se podía dar un paso sin encontrar gente desolada, triste, herida, hambrienta… o refugios improvisados con palos y plásticos en medio de las calles destruidas.

Habían detectado un niño sobreviviente entre los escombros de una casa. Debido a la inestabilidad del piso, la Policía había acordonado el sitio y me quedaba imposible acercarme. Decidí rodear la manzana y, ya un poco acostumbrado luego de dos días de andar por la ciudad, escale los escombros para llegar desde la parte de atrás. Dos horas después estaba a veinte metros del rescate, y me quede ahí medio escondido de las autoridades para que no me expulsaran. Con el tiempo me fui acercando poco a poco para que los policías se fueran acostumbrando a mi presencia. Hasta que a las 2 am quede a tres metros. aprovechando los cambios de guardia.

A esa distancia aprendi todo acerca del rescate de Jeison, habia policías, bomberos, mineros, Defensa Civil y asesores extranjeros. atrapado a nueve metros horizontalmente y un cinco verticalmente. Cinco personas acostadas en fila habían construido con sus manos un túnel del grosor de una, excavando, apuntalando y evacuando los escombros poco a poco hasta llevarlos al exterior. Hacia las seis de la mañana pudieron hablar con Jeison y Ahora tenían que excavar a su alrededor para sacarlo.

En un momento dado, necesitaron un cuchillo o algo con filo para poder cortar la suela del zapato, y les entregué mi navaja, cuya cierra funsiono muy bien. Asi ya me vieron como parte del equipo. y por la mañana me dejaron arrastrarme con la cámara y tomar una sola foto de Jeison en el fondo del tunel.

A media mañana, mientras esperábamos el final , escuchamos un lamento, pero a pesar de buscar mucho, no vimos ni sentimos nada.

Al siguiente día, pase por las ruinas de la casa de Jeison y vi cómo sacaban los restos de su madre, que sí se encontraba atrapada en el sitio donde estuvimos toda la noche.

Something timeless about my photography

With this camera I can distribute the sharpening and mount on digital instead of film, mixing the best photography methods of both yesterday and today.

The opossite

Big production. Two full studio days in Bogota only to generate an idea for shooting many photos of clothing over the course of the several days. Flash, a gigantic studio, many models and crew involved, the set without assemblies or retouching since we decided on a simple and clean look. This photo was not approved by the client.

Johnnie Walker walks with giants

Mario Hernandez didn't realize that the photographer hired for the Johnnie Walker campaign "walk with giants" was the same one who worked on his first product catalogs, and the one he had helped with his photography studies in Europe. It was a reunion of old friends, which made the days spent shooting very enjoyable.

Mario Hernandez no sabia que el fotografo encargado de sus fotos para la campaña "camina con gigantes" de Johnnie Walker, era el mismo que hizo sus primeros catalogos de producto, y que el ayudo en parte para sus estudios de fotografia en Europa.

Fue un encuentro de viejos amigos, que hizo de estos dos dias de shooting una experiencia muy agradable.

This is Britt, an 18 year-old model fresh out of high school. She arrived at my studio at 5 pm as was arranged for our photo shoot, and although we had everything ready to go, but something happened and we needed to cancel last minute. I apologized, we did a quick light check and rescheduled for two days later.

During the actual shoot I found out that Britt and her mother had traveled 7 hours from Jacksonville to Miami both times I asked her to come in, and on top of that they returned home after leaving my studio at midnight. I was very surprised to learn that they had made the same trip before and impressed by their extremely polite and flexible reaction to the cancellation.

Britt llego con su madre al estudio para ser modelo en este proyecto pero apesar de que teniamos todo listo, algo paso y simplemente aplazamos las fotos 2 dias.
Pero para Britt y su madre no fue tan simple. Ellas viajaron 7 horas desde Jacksonville, regresaron el mismo dia, y 2 dias despues hicieron el mismo recorrido, solo que el regreso fue a la media noche despues de terminar.
Esto me lo conto Marie, la otra modelo, que en contraste, vive en South beach, a 10 minutos en bicicleta.

Pasion por el Futbol- Passion of Soccer

"No sabia que eran unas fotos tan elaboradas," nos dijo el senor Javier Aguirre, tecnico de la seleccion mexicana cuando nos recibio en el elevador privado de su apartamento en Key Biscayne y vio el grupo de vestuarista, maquillador, asistentes, equipo y racks de ropa. "Cuanto nos demoramos?" Una hora larguita," le dije.

Que personaje tan estupendo. Nos dio casi 3 horas, nos hizo poses muy buenas, y se cambio varias veces de ropa.

Pero su mayor prueba de caballerosidad y paciencia fue controlarse y mantener la calma, con los multiples consejos futbolisticos de mi asistente argentino, quien le decia: "Yo se que es el primer partido, pero tomelo con calma".

Yo creo que ellos tambien van a estar nerviosos, deberia concentrarse en el ataque......etc etc.

Que pena! No lo pudimos controlar la pasion del football.

The Passion of Soccer

I didn't realize that this would be such an elaborate photo shoot" Told us Mr. Javier Aguirre, Coach of the Mexican National Team, when he greeted us in the private elevator of his apartment in Key Biscayne and saw the wardrobe coordinator, makeup artist, assistants, equipment and racks of clothes.

"How long will this take?""

A little over an hour," I told him.

This amazing man gave us almost three hours, with great poses and multiple wardrobe changes.

But his greater test of chivalry was to maintain his calm with the constant feedback from my Argentinean assistant, who told him:

"I know it's the first game, but take it easy.

I believe they're going to be nervous, so they should concentrate on the attack...etc, etc.

What a shame! , We could not control the passion of the game.

Supermodel Claudia Schiffer flew from China to my studio in Bogotá for a communications campaign as well as an fashion editorial. It was the first time that a supermodel of her status visited Colombia and because of this we had many preparations and pre-production meetings, security and press. The police closed the street of the studio for the day, and we received almost 150 people including clients, the agency, press, personnel and special guests.

Breaking the ice Shooting

Many stories came about from these photos, but the best happened during an initial photo session that I did with natural light to get to know Claudia and to break the ice. Her manager came on the set to tell me that they were leaving and could not do the campaign because the payment had not been received by the bank.

This caused a crisis of almost an hour in which both sides were sinking deeper into a situation with no way out. Nobody was yielding nor offering a solution until Susi, who is capable of maintaining calm in the midst of chaos, offered a solution. Besides speaking perfect German, Spanish and English, Susi is an excellent mediator and very quickly made everyone smile again so that we could begin our long day of work in the best of spirits. We continued with the photo shoot and delivered the rolls to her manager, who returned them to us for development once the payment was received by the bank in Germany.

La Supermodelo Claudia Schiffer voló desde China a mi estudio de Bogotá, para hacer una campaña de comunicaciones y un editorial de moda. Era la primera vez que una supermodelo como ella visitaba Colombia y por esto tuvimos muchos preparativos y reuniones de preproducción, seguridad , prensa etc. La policía cerró la calle del estudio durante todo el día, y recibimos casi 150 personas entre clientes, la agencia, prensa, invitados especiales y personal.

Muchas historias se tejieron alrededor de estas fotos, pero la mejor sucedió cuando luego de una primera sesión fotográfica que hice con luz natural, para conocernos con Claudia y romper el hielo, su manager me dice que se van y no pueden hacer la campaña porque el dinero del pago no había sido consignado en el banco.

Esto formó una fuerte crisis de casi una hora, los involucrados estaban entrando cada ves más en una situación sin salida, en que ninguno cedía ni ofrecía una solución, hasta que Susi, que es capaz de mantener la calma hasta cayendo por un abismo, dio la solución, y además con su perfecto alemán, español e ingles, supo mediar entre las partes, y muy sutilmente lograr que todos otra vez sonrieran, y comenzaremos el largo día de trabajo con el mejor ánimo. Tomamos las fotos y entregamos todos los rollos a la manager de Claudia, que nos los devolvió para su revelado, cuando recibió la confirmación del banco en Alemania.

Ten years ago

My children Manuela and Tomás were born and raised in the studio in Bogotá.
They used to play ball against the walls, skate over the white floor and sometimes I would find giant colorful crayola drawings all over the walls (including racetracks for their toy cars).
They walked in and out of my photo shoots as they pleased because the studio was their home.
Once during a photo shoot with Bogota's Mayor Antanas Mockus, I had to leave the set for a moment to answer a phone call and Manuela decided to take her own pictures of him.
I think it was the first time, of many, that she did not agree with my point of view as a photographer.

Hace 10 años

Mis hijos Manuel y Tomas nacieron y crecieron en el estudio de Bogota. Solian jugar pelota contra los sin fines,patinar en el piso blanco, y a veces encontraba dibujos gigantes con crayolas en las paredes o pistas para carritos de juguete pintadas en el piso etc.

Ellos entraban y salian cuando querian, de las seciones de fotos en que yo trabajaba, por que estaban en su casa, o solo observaban desde lejos.

Bogota's studio (floor three)

En esta ocasion , durante una secion con el alcalde de Bogota Antanas Mockus, tuve que salir del set a contestar una llamada, y al regresar encuentre que Manuela decidio hacer sus propias fotos del sr. Mockus. Creo que fue la primera vez; de muchas; que no estuvo de acuerdo con mi punto de vista acerca de una foto.

ecretary had no problem letting me in to take this photo. I got a rush of adrenaline when Mr... introduced me to President Clinton over the P.A., along with the others present. I was surprised to find a messy pile of papers on his desk along with informal attire which contrasted with the elegance of the people surrounding him.

Quickly I set up my lights, and as soon as I took my first two shots the meeting was over. They said their good byes and I was left alone with 2 photos in my roll of 6x6. Fortunately of which the editor of Ga

to Pardo magazine really liked.

Mark mellman es uno de los encuestadores politicos mas importantes del mundo, y asesor del presidente Bill Clinton.

El estaba en su oficina de Washington D.C. en medio de una conferencia telefonica junto con otras 8 personas, y la secretaria no tuvo inconveniente en hacerme entrar de improviso para tomar esta foto. Me produjo cierta adrenalina cuando Mr. Mellman me presento al presidente Clinton y los otros presentes en el altavoz. Ademas descubro este monumental desorden en su escritorio y el atuendo muy informal de Mellman, que contrasta con la elegancia de los otros asistentes.

Muy rapido arme mis luces, y cuando dispare las dos primeras fotos, subitamente se termino la reunion, se despidieron y me quede solo, con 2 fotos en el rollo de 6x6,

de las cuales afortunadamente esta, le gusto mucho al editor de la revista GATO PARDO.

DOUBLE MARATHON

About a year ago we did one of our most anticipated campaigns, and I also trained for my first 100 mile race.
Both events are physical and mental challenges, and I enjoy the process in both.
needless to say I'm a photographer first and a runner second, which would be my reasoning for not being able to finish 100 miles ( I accomplished to run 70 miles ,which up to date stands as my record as a runner ), but we did manage to create a beautiful photo campaign.
here i have a table comparing factors of these "marathons", that happened around the same time. I ran a weekend in Miami in between the two weeks of photos during the campaign in Bogota.

Training:
Photo Campaign: never stop training, and 10 years of working with this client.
Ultra marathon:
4 years since my wife bought me my first tennis shoes with a nike plus chip, more than 5 marathons, 2 ultra marathons and 6 months of training for this specific race.

Duration:
Photo campaign:
15 days from sunrise to sunset, and some pre production days
Ultra Marathon:
started at 5 am till 3 the next morning, 22 hours at 100 degree weather when the sun was up.

Co-workers:
photo campaign:
2 client creative directors, 1 executive director, 1 production director, 4 fashion designers, 2 graphic designers, 8 models (kids, women and men), 3 camera assistants, make up artist, hair stylist,2 chefs, 3 drivers, various gardners, and more.
Ultra marathon:
2 trainers,camilo and Edwin, 2 teams for water, that took turns through the 22 hour period, team1 :my wife susi and my son tomas. team 2: (good friends) Sandra and David, and a motivator (friend) Emilio, who ran 10 miles with me

Materials:
photo campaign: The clothing, about 500 GB of memory, a lot of food and a great ambient.
ultra marathon:2 pairs of tennis shoes, 5 gallons of water, 30 capsules of salt in a protein mix, carbohydrates and natural gels.

Hace casi un año por esta epoca, hicimos una de las campañas que mas esperamos, igual que entrene y espere la llegada de mi primera carrera de 100 millas, 150km, corriendo.
Ambos eventos son todo un reto intelectual y fisico, y en los dos casos disfruto mucho de todo el proceso .
Soy mejor tomando fotos que corriendo. y solo logre completar 70 de las 100 millas, que es mi record personal como corredor, pero si logramos hacer exelentes fotos para la campana.
A continuacion una tabla comparativa de datos de estos dos "maratones", que se cruzaron en el tiempo, y corri un fin de semana en Miami, en medio de las 2 semanas de fotos que duro la campaña en Bogota.

Desde hace mas de 20 años. Y de esos, 10 desarrollando un estilo con mi cliente.
Ultramaraton keys 100:
4 años desde que mi esposa me regalo los primeros tenis con chip Nike, mas de 5 maratones, 2 ultramaratones y 6 meses para para esta carrera.
Duracion del del evento
Campana fotografica: 15 dias desde antes del amanecer hasta entrada la noche, mas algunos dias de preproduccion.
Ultramaraton: 5 am a 3 am del otro dia, 22 horas en una temperatura de 37c durante el dia.

Coequiperos:
Campaña fotografia:
2 Clientes directores creativos , 1 director ejecutivo ,1 director de produccion , 4 disendoras de moda , 2 disenadoras graficas , 8 modelos mujeres hombres y niños , 3 asistentes de camara, maquillador, peinador, cocineras, conductores , varios jardineros, y otros .

Ultramaraton:
2 entrenadores Camilo y Edwin, 2 equipos de aguateros que se turnaron : equipo 1: mi esposa y mi hijo Tomas, equipo 2: Amigos Sandra y David, y Emilio, que corrio 10 millas conmigo, mas el equipo de apoyo de la carrera.

Materiales:
Campaña fotografica:
Ropa, aprox 500 gb de memoria, papel,tinta,comida y buen ambiente.
Ultramaraton:
2 tenis, 5 galones de agua, 30 capsulas de sal dentro de una mezcla de proteinas, carbohidratos y gels naturales.
